JourneyChurch Hosts ‘Suitcase Sunday’ to Benefit Oklahoma Children in Foster Care

NORMAN, Okla., Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire — There are more than 10,000 children in foster care in the state of Oklahoma. The pastors of JourneyChurch recently learned the majority of them don’t have a suitcase to carry their possessions when they move from home to home. As a team, they decided to take action and host a “Suitcase Sunday” event as part of their church-wide study on chapter one in the Bible’s Book of James.

“When we learned that these children often transition their few belongings in trash bags because they don’t have suitcases, we knew that our church family could step in and help provide,” senior pastor Clark Mitchell said.

Steven Hall, a church staff member, recently witnessed this hardship firsthand. He and his wife, Sara, care for foster children, and they shared that the young boy they recently took in arrived with all his belongings in trash bags.

“Our hope is that we can bless literally thousands of children with a new suitcase,” pastor Mitchell explained. “We know that this act of kindness will not only bring them a small amount of dignity, but also a large amount of hope and the realization that they are loved.”

“Suitcase Sunday” is happening Sunday, October 26, during the church’s four weekend worship experiences at 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m., and at 6 p.m. Those who wish to help are asked to bring a new or gently used suitcase at these times.

JourneyChurch will also host several foster care and adoption organizations on that Sunday to raise awareness about opportunities to care for children, including the church’s own orphan care ministry, Love Does, which was created by families within JourneyChurch who passionately fulfill this call.

Located at 3801 Journey Parkway, in Norman, Okla., JourneyChurch invites the community to come participate in blessing these children with suitcases and to learn about the many opportunities that are available to play a part in caring for them.
