Last month, Luther Rice College and Seminary launched its newest degree program, a Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Scripture. Luther Rice is now accepting applications and will offer classes this Fall semester in the program. The Ph.D. in Christian Scripture degree is the second Ph.D. program, third doctoral program overall, now offered at Luther Rice. The Doctor of Ministry and Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership are the other doctoral programs available to prospective students.
The Ph.D. in Christian Scripture, which may be completed 100% online or in combination with on-campus classes, is a 58 credit-hour program that is designed to train students in the rigor and skills necessary to become competent scholars in the areas of the Old Testament, New Testament, and Biblical Theology. The Ph.D. in Christian Scripture is one of the most efficient (in terms of credit hours) and affordable programs of its kind in the nation.
The program was strategically designed to include 18 credit hours of Old Testatment studies and 18 credit hours of New Testament studies to equip graduates to teach in both areas.
Students in the program will acquire the skills necessary to be better readers and teachers of the Christian Scripture. These skills include advanced exegetical skills related to the Hebrew and Greek canons of both the Old and New Testaments and an emphasis on methodologies related to biblical interpretation and biblical theology. These elements are meant to introduce the individual to the variety of approaches of moving from exegesis to theology.
